As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s health system and eliminate preventable childhood disabilities, PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation (PLAN Foundation), with the support of MiracleFeet, successfully conducted a 2-Day Basic Ponseti and Cast Training for clinicians from Clubfoot Clinics at State Hospital Ijaye-Abeokuta and State Hospital Ota, Ogun State. The training took place from September 29th–30th, 2025, at the University of Ibadan Conference Centre.
The capacity-building workshop was designed to enhance the technical expertise of clinicians in the early detection, effective treatment, and referral of children with clubfoot, ensuring that every child has access to timely and standardized care using the Ponseti Method a globally recognized, evidence-based approach for correcting congenital clubfoot.

The Ponseti training sessions were facilitated by Dr. Allen Taylor and Dr. James Adeniran, both highly experienced orthopedic specialists who guided participants through comprehensive modules on diagnosis, manipulation techniques, bracing protocols, relapse prevention, and patient counseling. Participants gained hands-on experience in the Ponseti method of treatment, including safe cast removal, reapplication, correction techniques, and the use of proper materials and tools to ensure patient comfort and effective outcomes. These practical exercises allowed clinicians to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios under expert supervision.

Following the clinical sessions, participants proceeded to the Cast Training session, facilitated by Ms. Leye Ojemuyiwa, the Program Manager of PLAN Foundation. This session focused on the use of digital tools such as tablets and mobile applications for patient tracking, data entry, progress monitoring, and reporting. The integration of these technologies aims to strengthen clinic-level data management, improve case follow-up, and ensure long-term treatment success for children living with clubfoot.

Beyond skill development, the training fostered collaboration, peer learning, and professional networking among healthcare providers committed to improving child health and disability prevention. Participants shared experiences, discussed challenges, and explored innovative strategies to strengthen early identification, referral systems, and continuity of care within Ogun State’s healthcare structure.

Through initiatives like this, PLAN Foundation continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s health system and promoting inclusive healthcare for all children. By building the capacity of frontline healthcare providers, PLAN Foundation and MiracleFeet are ensuring that more children born with clubfoot can walk confidently and live healthier, fuller lives—free from preventable disability.
