“A tree does not bear fruit overnight. Its strength comes from deep roots, a resilient trunk, healthy branches, and a nurturing environment. The same is true of sustainable development.”
The PLAN Foundation Tree of Impact is more than a graphic. It is the visual expression of our identity, our philosophy of change, and our commitment to creating lasting improvements in the health and wellbeing of people and communities.
Developed during our 2026 strategic review, the Tree of Impact represents how PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation (PLAN Foundation) creates sustainable change—from the values that anchor our work to the measurable impact we seek across Nigeria and beyond.
Every project we implement, every partnership we build, every policy we influence, and every community we serve contributes to the growth of this tree.
It reminds us that meaningful development is not achieved through isolated projects. It is achieved through interconnected investments that strengthen systems, empower people, generate evidence, and create lasting institutional change.
A Message from the Executive Director
For more than two decades, PLAN Foundation has remained committed to one simple belief: every person deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, dignified and productive life regardless of gender, disability, age, economic status or geographical location.
Since our establishment in 2002, we have evolved from implementing community health projects into a trusted development organization that works across multiple sectors to improve health outcomes, influence public policy, strengthen institutions and empower communities.
Throughout this journey, we have learned an important lesson.
Development is rarely linear.
Communities thrive when health systems are stronger. Young people succeed when education is linked with opportunity. Women flourish when their rights are protected. Persons with disabilities participate fully when barriers are removed. Governments perform better when policies are informed by evidence. Civil society becomes more effective when organizations collaborate rather than compete.
These connections inspired the PLAN Foundation Tree of Impact.
Our Tree of Impact reflects our conviction that sustainable development requires deep institutional roots, strong partnerships, innovative solutions and community ownership.
Between 2026 and 2030, this framework will guide every strategic decision we make, ensuring that our investments today continue to produce healthier communities, stronger institutions and more resilient societies for generations to come.

Understanding the Tree of Impact
Every component of the Tree carries strategic meaning.
Together they explain how PLAN Foundation transforms resources into lasting social impact.
The Roots: Our Foundation
Every healthy tree depends on strong roots.
Likewise, every successful development organization depends upon values, credibility and institutional strength.
The roots of the Tree of Impact represent the principles that sustain PLAN Foundation:
- Integrity and accountability
- Community ownership
- Equity and inclusion
- Human rights
- Gender equality
- Disability inclusion
- Evidence-informed decision making
- Innovation
- Transparency

- Environmental sustainability
These roots also represent our institutional assets:

- Community trust
- Strong governance
- Financial stewardship
- Research capacity
- Long-term partnerships
- Continuous learning
Without strong roots, no organization can sustain meaningful impact.
The Trunk: PLAN Foundation
The trunk represents PLAN Foundation itself.
It is the institution that connects vision with action.
Our role extends beyond project implementation.
We convene partners.
We generate evidence.
We strengthen institutions.
We influence policy.
We build capacity.
We mobilize communities.
We advocate for social justice.
We nurture innovation.
Like the trunk of a tree, PLAN Foundation provides the stability that enables diverse programmes to grow while remaining connected to a common mission.
The Branches: Our Strategic Pillars
The branches represent our strategic areas of work.
Although each branch has its own focus, they are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.

The fruits of the Tree of Impact represent the positive changes experienced by individuals, families, institutions and society.
These include:

Success is measured not only by activities completed but by lives transformed.
Our Strategic Priorities (2026–2030)
Between 2026 and 2030, PLAN Foundation will pursue five strategic priorities.
1. Strengthen Health Systems
Improve access to quality, people-centred healthcare through partnerships with governments, health institutions and communities.
2. Champion Inclusive Development
Ensure women, children, young people and persons with disabilities participate fully in development and benefit equitably from public services.
3. Generate Evidence for Better Policy
Expand operational research, implementation science and policy analysis to support evidence-informed decision-making.
4. Accelerate Innovation
Harness artificial intelligence, digital health, climate-smart solutions and community innovation to improve programme effectiveness and reach underserved populations.
5. Build Strong Institutions and Partnerships
Strengthen civil society organizations, foster multi-sector collaboration and mobilize sustainable resources to achieve long-term impact.
How the Tree Guides Our Work
The Tree of Impact is not merely an illustration. It is PLAN Foundation’s strategic decision-making framework.
Project Design
Every new project must contribute to at least one strategic pillar while strengthening the overall health of the Tree.
Partnerships
We seek partnerships that complement our strengths and create collective impact across government, academia, civil society, development partners and the private sector.
Evidence and Learning
Every programme generates knowledge that informs future investments and improves development practice.
Resource Mobilisation
We pursue funding opportunities that advance our long-term mission rather than isolated activities, ensuring sustainability and coherence.
Organisational Learning
The Tree enables continuous reflection, adaptation and innovation as emerging challenges and opportunities arise.
Looking Ahead
The years ahead present extraordinary opportunities.
Rapid technological advances, growing recognition of disability inclusion, renewed commitments to universal health coverage, increasing attention to climate-health and stronger citizen engagement are reshaping the development landscape.
PLAN Foundation intends not merely to respond to these changes but to help shape them.
By remaining rooted in our values while embracing innovation, we will continue building healthier communities, stronger institutions and more equitable societies.
Join Us in Growing the Tree of Impact
No single organization can solve today’s complex development challenges alone.
Transformative change requires collaboration across sectors, disciplines and communities.
We invite:
- Governments to partner with us in strengthening policies, systems and public institutions.
- Development partners and donors to invest in scalable, evidence-driven solutions that deliver lasting impact.
- Universities and research institutions to collaborate in generating knowledge and translating evidence into practice.
- Civil society organizations to build stronger movements, share learning and amplify community voices.
- Private sector partners to contribute innovation, technology and sustainable investment.
- Communities to remain at the centre of every solution, shaping programmes that reflect their aspirations and priorities.
Together, we can nurture deeper roots, stronger branches and richer harvests.
Together, we can build healthier lives, more inclusive societies and resilient communities.
Together, we will continue growing the PLAN Foundation Tree of Impact.
