PLAN FOUNDATION REPORT ON THE BIANNUAL REVIEW AND PLANNING MEETING UNDER THE ACCELERATING COMMUNITY COMMITMENT TOWARDS EXPANDING SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS IN OYO STATE (ACCESS PROJECT), FUNDED BY AMPLIFYCHANGE
HELD ON 16TH OF JANUARY 2025
The Project Advisory Committee (PAC) on the ACCESS Project was established to provide strategic guidance, oversight, and expert input into the implementation of the project. The biannual Review and Planning Meeting was held on January 16, 2025, at the office of PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation in Ibadan, Nigeria.
The purpose of the meeting was to review progress made during the last implementation phase, evaluate results, challenges, and lessons learned, deliberate on key priorities for the next phase of the project, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders to ensure alignment with the project goals.
The meeting was attended by all the Project Working Group members for the ACCESS Project. At the meeting, PLAN Foundation’s Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Mr. Johnson Ayoola presented the baseline report of the operational research led by the Faculty of Nursing, University of Ibadan. The baseline survey was conducted in four Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Oyo State among teachers and students of secondary schools, as well as healthcare workers. The LGAs included Ido, Oyo East, Iseyin, and Ona Ara. Oyo East and Ido LGAs were randomly selected as the Experimental Group (EG), while Iseyin and Ona Ara served as the Control Group (CG).
In the report, the principal investigator analyzed the level of knowledge among students and teachers regarding comprehensive sexuality education, as well as the responses of healthcare workers in delivering comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services to the in-school youths in the schools targeted for the intervention.
In addition, the baseline report conducted by the data consultant for state-level stakeholders was also presented to the PAC.
Key Achievements
- Training of healthcare workers and teachers as iChoose supervisors.
- Selection and training of iChoose peer educators.
- Support for Mariam: a young girl helped to return to school after childbirth.
- A student at UCCS who dropped out of school due to pregnancy returned after intervention by a peer educator.
- According to data from the Primary Healthcare Centre, there was a 23% increase in in-school youths accessing sexual and reproductive health services at the centres.
Challenges
Inconsistent data reporting from iChoose supervisors.
Next Phase
The Committee proposed that strategies should be explored to support parents and guidance on the in-school youths for active engagement and involvement in responses towards preventing unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions, as these responsibilities should not rest solely on iChoose supervisors and peer educators.
Conclusion
The Biannual Review and Planning Meeting concluded with a message from the Executive Director of the organisation. He thanked the committee members and appreciated their dedication to the organisation’s vision and the project’s goals. He assured them that their recommendations would be duly considered and would play a critical role in the successful implementation of the next phase of the project.
