PLAN HEALTH ADVOCACY AND DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (PLAN FOUNDATION) REPORT ON THE DEVELOPMENT, REVIEW AND VALIDATION WORKSHOP OF THE OYO STATE GUIDELINES ON SAFE TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY FOR LEGAL INDICATIONS (STOP)

PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation, represented by its Executive Director, Mr Obatunde Oladapo, actively participated in the two-day Development, Review, and Validation Workshop of the Oyo State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications (STOP), organised by Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation.
The workshop brought together government representatives, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, and development partners to review, adapt, and validate the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications to reflect the realities and needs of Oyo State.
Day One
The workshop commenced with an overview of the objectives and expected outcomes of the meeting. Participants were introduced to the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications (STOP).
Key presentations included the following:
- An introduction and overview of the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications (STOP), facilitated by Dr Fehintola.
- The rationale for the development of the National STOP Guidelines, presented by Doris.
- Discussions on existing laws and policies relating to the termination of pregnancy in Nigeria.
- Clarification of key terms and concepts contained in the guidelines.
- A presentation on the Oyo State context, highlighting maternal mortality, unsafe abortion, and the need for evidence-based guidance to improve maternal health outcomes.
Following the presentations and discussions, participants engaged in group work to review the National STOP Guidelines and adapt them to the Oyo State context. The session, facilitated by Dr Fehintola, allowed stakeholders to make recommendations and provide inputs for the draft Oyo State STOP Guidelines
Day Two
The second day began with the presentation of the final draft of the Oyo State STOP Guidelines by Dr. Fehintola. Participants reviewed the revised document and reached a consensus on the proposed amendments.
The workshop concluded with discussions on timelines and next steps towards the official launch and implementation of the Oyo State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications.
As part of its commitment to strengthening partnerships in sexual and reproductive health advocacy, the Executive Director of PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation leveraged the opportunity to facilitate the participation of three partner organisations that are actively committed to advancing women’s health advocacy.
These organisations included Committed Souls Women’s Health Advocacy, African Initiative Foundation, Vision Spring, and One Line Foundation. Their participation enriched the discussions and strengthened collaboration among civil society organisations working to improve women’s health and reproductive rights in Nigeria.
Conclusion
The workshop provided an important platform for stakeholders to collaboratively review and validate the Oyo State STOP Guidelines. The participation of PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting evidence-based policies, strengthening partnerships, and supporting initiatives that improve maternal health and ensure access to safe and legal reproductive health services in line with national laws and public health standards.
