Reports on ACCESS Project 3-Day Workshop
3-Day Workshop on Training Healthcare Workers and Teachers in Youth-Friendly Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Improved SRH Service Delivery for In-School Youths.
ACCELERATING COMMUNITY COMMITMENT TOWARDS EXPANDING SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS IN OYO STATE (ACCESS PROJECT)
FUNDED BY AMPLIFYCHANGE
As part of its ongoing commitment to the ACCESS Project, PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation organized a dynamic 3-day workshop aimed at reshaping the delivery of youth-friendly sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in Oyo State. Held from November 5th to 7th, 2024, at the University of Ibadan Conference Centre, the workshop provided a collaborative platform for healthcare workers, educators, and facilitators to strengthen their capacities and share best practices.
Day One: Setting the Stage for Change
The workshop began with an energizing introduction by Dr. Stella Akinso, a renowned expert in SRH service delivery. She outlined the workshop’s ambitious goals, emphasizing the need to equip participants with the skills and confidence to provide comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and SRH services that meet the unique needs of young people. Dr. Akinso stressed the importance of fostering safe, supportive environments in schools and healthcare settings to empower adolescents to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. She presented a clear roadmap for the training, highlighting key objectives such as:
- Building a strong foundation in CSE and SRH knowledge and skills.
- Enhancing understanding of adolescent development and youth-friendly service delivery.
- Cultivating effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Developing strategies to create supportive environments for CSE and SRH.

The day’s first session, led by Mr. Siji Ganiyu, reviewed the fundamentals of youth-friendly CSE. Mr. Ganiyu explained that CSE is more than just a curriculum; it’s a transformative approach designed to address the developmental, cultural, and emotional realities of young people. He shared stories of how CSE empowers adolescents to make responsible decisions, fostering respect, equality, and healthier communities.
Day Two: Diving Deeper into Challenges and Skills
The second day opened with a thought-provoking session on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges, delivered by Dr. Akinso. Using real-life examples and data, she unpacked the complexities of SRH, explaining that it encompasses not just the absence of illness but the ability to enjoy safe, healthy, and fulfilling relationships. Participants engaged in spirited discussions about the barriers young people face, from stigma and misinformation to lack of access to youth-friendly services.
Interactive sessions followed, including Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills facilitated by Dr. Akinso. Through role-playing exercises, participants practiced scenarios such as:
- Addressing sensitive sexual health questions in a school counselor’s office.
- Navigating peer pressure and decision-making in social settings.
- Handling confidential disclosures in a school clinic.
Each exercise drew laughter, reflections, and moments of realization as participants recognized the importance of building trust and rapport with young people.
Day Three: Turning Knowledge into Action
The final day was all about action. Participants delved into Creating Supportive Environments for Community-Based Sexuality Education, brainstorming ways to make schools and clinics more inclusive and welcoming for adolescents. They also explored Monitoring and Evaluation strategies to ensure their efforts would lead to measurable outcomes.
As the workshop drew to a close, an Action Planning and Commitment session allowed participants to outline practical steps for applying what they’d learned. Each attendee shared their plans, from introducing peer-led CSE sessions to setting up youth-friendly corners in their schools.
The PLAN Foundation team was visibly moved by the enthusiasm of all participants at the workshop and commended everyone for their dedication. “This is more than a workshop,” one of the facilitators concluded. “It’s a movement to transform the future of our youth, one informed decision at a time.”
A Path Forward
The workshop ended successfully, with participants leaving not just with knowledge but with a shared commitment to empowering young people across Oyo State. As they stepped out of the conference center, they carried with them the tools and determination to shape a future where every adolescent has the information and support, they need to thrive.
