2-DAYS WORKSHOP ON THE REVIEW AND DEVELOPMENT OF EXPANDED LIFE PLANNING MANUAL AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN CONFERENCE CENTER ON
TUESDAY OCTOBER 8TH-WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9TH, 2024.

INTRODUCTION

On October 8th and 9th, 2024, the University of Ibadan Conference Center hosted a pivotal two-day workshop organized by PLAN Health Advocacy and Development Foundation (PLAN Foundation). This workshop was part of the ACCESS Project, funded by Amplify Change, which aims to improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for women and girls in Oyo State.
The primary focus of the workshop was to review the Expanded Life Planning Education manual tailored for in-school youths and this aligns with PLAN Foundation’s commitment to equipping young people with the knowledge and skills necessary for making informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health under the Access Project.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

The workshop achieves the following objectives:

Review Existing Curriculum: Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the abandoned Life Planning Education Manual
Incorporate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE): Develop a more inclusive and effective manual that integrates Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) principles.
Empowering Educators and Stakeholders: Enhancing the capacity of educators and stakeholders to deliver the revised manual effectively.
Promote Youth-Centric Approaches: Ensure the manual addresses the needs and challenges faced by young people in Oyo State.

WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES

The two-day event was marked by engaging sessions, discussions, and collaborative efforts:

Day 1: Tuesday, October 8th, 2024

Opening Ceremony:
Welcome address by PLAN Foundation representatives.
Overview of the ACCESS Project by project coordinators.
Keynote speech emphasizing the importance of Life Planning Education and CSE.

Review Sessions:
Assessment of the Life Planning material to develop into manual.
Identification of gaps and areas for improvement.

Breakout Groups:
Participants divided into smaller groups to brainstorm innovative ways to integrate CSE into the manual.

Day 2: Wednesday, October 9th, 2024

Development Sessions:
Collaborative drafting of the Life Planning Education manual.
Incorporation of feedback from educators, curriculum developers, and stakeholders.

Capacity-Building Workshop:
Training sessions on best practices for delivering the revised manual.
Strategies for engaging students in meaningful discussions about SRH.

Closing Ceremony:
Presentation of the draft manual.
Closing remarks and a vote of thanks by PLAN Foundation representatives.

OUTCOMES AND IMPACT

The workshop successfully achieved its objectives, resulting in:

Drafted Expanded Manual: A comprehensive draft of the Life Planning Education manual that integrates CSE and addresses the unique needs of in-school youths.

Increased Collaboration: Strengthened partnerships between educators, stakeholders, and the PLAN Foundation Team.
Enhanced Capacity: Improved skills and knowledge among participants to deliver effective SRH education.

CONCLUSION

The two-day workshop shows the critical role of Life Planning Education in empowering young people with the tools to make informed decisions about their health and future. The collaborative efforts during the workshop have laid a solid foundation for the implementation of an enriched manual that aligns with the objectives of the ACCESS Project.
