(ACCESS PROJECT) FUNDED BY AMPLIFYCHANGE
As part of the ongoing journey to strengthen The Accelerating Community Commitment towards Expanding Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Women and Girls in Oyo State (ACCESS Project) a one-day sensitization training was held on Wednesday, September 25th at the prestigious conference center of the University of Ibadan. The training, focused on value clarification and safe abortion within the context of SRH, conducted for the project planning and implementation team. The session was led by Dr. Adejoke Oyewo, whose expertise and insights significantly enriched the participants’ understanding of critical SRH issues.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRAINING
1. Pre-sensitization Rapid Assessment and SRH Concepts
Dr. Oyewo began the session by emphasizing the importance of conducting a pre-sensitization rapid assessment to identify the needs, gaps, and barriers within the community. She provided a detailed explanation of SRH concepts, focusing on the rights and health needs of women and girls. The discussion stressed the importance of collaborative efforts involving stakeholders, ranging from government bodies to service providers and the communities they serve.
2. Stakeholder Engagement in SRH
A significant portion of the training addressed the engagement of key stakeholders. Dr. Oyewo outlined strategies for involving policymakers, healthcare providers, community leaders, and service users to create an enabling environment for SRH interventions. She highlighted the need to eliminate barriers, such as stigma and inadequate resources, which hinder access to safe and effective reproductive health services.
3. Safe Abortion and Post-Abortion Care
Dr. Oyewo provided a comprehensive overview of abortion, discussing its signs, symptoms, and potential complications. She emphasized the need for safe abortion practices where legally permissible and the importance of post-abortion care in addressing complications and ensuring recovery. The session explored the risks associated with unsafe abortions and strategies to prevent them through education, access to family planning, and quality health services.

4. Adolescent Reproductive Health Needs
Recognizing the unique reproductive health needs of adolescents, Dr. Oyewo dedicated a segment of the training to family planning and promoting responsible sexual behavior among young people. She reviewed the importance of tailored interventions that address the vulnerabilities of this age group, including the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.
5. Value and Value Clarification in SRH
The session also delved into the role of values in shaping attitudes and behaviors related to SRH. Dr. Oyewo facilitated discussions on how personal and societal values influence perceptions of abortion and reproductive health. She guided participants through exercises to clarify values and align them with evidence-based practices and human rights principles in SRH service delivery.
INTERACTIVE ENGAGEMENT/QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
The training concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. Participants sought clarifications and shared their experiences and challenges in implementing SRH programs. Dr. Oyewo provided practical solutions and reinforced the need for ongoing learning and adaptation to meet the diverse needs of women and girls in the community.
CONCLUSION
The sensitization training was an enlightening and impactful session, equipping the project planning and implementation team with knowledge and strategies to advance the ACCESS Project’s goals. The focus on stakeholder engagement, safe abortion, post-abortion care, and adolescent reproductive health provided a solid foundation for addressing key SRH challenges among women and girls in Oyo State.
The session shows the importance of collective action in creating an inclusive, supportive, and effective reproductive health system that prioritizes the rights and well-being of women and girls.
