Report Of The 3-Day Workshop For The Development Of The Healthcare Workers' Training Manual And Curriculum For Healthcare Workers Training Institutions, Held At Grand Serene Hotel, Iyaganku G.R.A On February 13th To 15th, 2024.
The 3-day workshop for developing the healthcare workers’ training manual and curriculum for healthcare workers training institutions on the provision of sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) services for women with disabilities had in attendance, twenty-five participants from various government agencies such as the Oyo State Ministry of Health, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Oyo State Hospitals Management Board, Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities (OYSAPD), Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, the Department of Nursing of the University of Ibadan as well as non-state actors including Members of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Oyo State Chapter, Media Practitioners, Development Partners, Community Birth Attendants and the EMBASSY Project Working Group.
On the first day of the workshop, PLAN Foundation Executive Director, Obatunde Oladapo warmly welcomed the participants and explained the objective of the workshop which was to converge the experience and expertise of the stakeholders in developing a for training healthcare workers on the provision of SRH services for women with disabilities as well as a curriculum for use by healthcare workers’ training institutions in order to equip their students with knowledge and skills for providing SRH services for women with disabilities in the State.
He stressed that the manual and curriculum would greatly improve access to quality and inclusive sexual and reproductive health services thereby removing multiple obstacles to accessing services. He was of the opinion that the training manual would enable the healthcare workers to understand the sexual and reproductive needs of persons with disabilities in order for them to provide inclusive sexual and reproductive services and the use of the curriculum would contribute to sustainable provision of knowledge and skill on inclusive SRH services among healthcare providers.
The participants were divided into four groups, each led by experienced facilitators. The facilitators are Dr. Titilayo Odetola, Head of Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan, Dr. Patricia Ogunmola, who is a community health practitioner and Nurse, Mr. Siji Ganiyu, a former Provost of the Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology and Mrs. Babarimisa, the Head of School of Orthopedic Cast Technology of Lagos State College of Medicine, guided their respective groups through a thorough review of the manual over three days.
The first draft of the manual and curriculum which were produced by the end of the workshop, consequently went through external review in the hands of experts in other states of Nigeria, comprehensive content review and proofreading from the PLAN Foundation staff. In order to make the manual user-friendly and easier to understand for various classes of users, captivating and culturally appropriate illustrations have been developed for relevant sections of the training and are in the process of finalization prior to going to press.
